I’ve had the pleasure of being Etta’s customer more than once. I think the first piece of hers that came to our household was commissioned by a graduating class at our high school to thank my wife for her service as its Class Sponsor one year. Then we came upon her pieces at various auctions in the community and became the proud owners of more Etta pottery. Then more recently, I’ve asked her to produce a few custom pieces myself, and I must say that the results were impressive. First, my construction company contracted with her to produce a tile with the logo of Park County, Colorado. We attached the finished product at the center of a custom concrete element on the exterior of an office building we were building for them. So in a very real sense, Etta’s piece became the icing on the cake in a very high-profile entry location to a public building. Second, she produced a coffee mug that commemorated the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Open Space Commission of Clear Creek County. In both of these cases, she successfully – artfully – copied the logo of a government agency as a hand-painted element onto ceramic ware. Those turned out so well that I also had her do a planter inscribed with the names of some friends and the date of their marriage.
I like being surrounded by her pieces, whether they’re mugs in the cabinet or planters on the hearth. Seeing the names and dates of special events is an extra bonus. And it’s even better because Etta is a strong supporter of community events herself, from environmental to social justice issues and beyond. She’s the kind of person whose work I would support anyway; but her pieces are so well done that I’d probably buy them even if she weren’t! You should, too.

I have been having Etta make special orders for me all the way back to when The River Sage restaurant was in Evergreen. That is where I first encountered her personalized mugs and cups as they used them in the restaurant. I have quite a collection of them and give them as presents. Not only is the art work beautiful, but you can put whatever sayings or sentiments you want on them. I’ve even come up with a few original ones which she has made. Having your favorite coffee, tea, or other drink from them adds a whole new level of enjoyment.

Etta is a wonderful person and an extremely talented potter. We love her work and have contracted with her on several occasions to create some special pieces for our home.
Our first custom order with Etta was for a set of graduated bowls with imprints of shells and natural grasses on the outside. She had never tried to imprint the outside of a piece using these materials before but she was willing to try and hit the mark perfectly!! They are so beautiful and, though they appear delicate, which is a testament to Etta’s skill as a potter, they are actually very sturdy. We use them all the time, put them through the dishwasher etc. We just love them!
Our second custom order with Etta was for a set of very large mugs. We are lovers of unusually large mugs (24 to 26 oz capacity) and have always had an extremely difficult (usually impossible) time finding them. When I broke one of the two I had treasured for so many years I looked all over for a replacement but ended up empty handed. When I contacted Etta about making some custom mugs for us I was, once again, not disappointed and wondered why I hadn’t just called her in the first place! The set is beautiful and we can enjoy our LARGE mugs of tea while reading in front of the fire on a cold Colorado night once again! We couldn’t be happier with them!
